The Bay of Naples once reached all the way to Via Santa Lucia, the
street that runs directly behind and parallel to Via N. Sauro, where Hotel
Miramare is situated. The road along the sea changes names
along the way (Via Caracciolo, Via Partenope, Via Nazario Sauro, and so on).
It's referred to as "the lungomare", and it did not exist at all until the
late 19th century. Hotel Miramare was originally built as an aristrocratic villa in 1914, and was transformed into a hotel in 1944 after it housed the American Consulate for a short period. Also for a brief interim, it was the only hotel in Naples since others had been damaged during WWII. After the war, newspaper articles and social columns made Hotel Miramare synonomous with the rebirth of Naples through the many activities and events held there. Hotel Miramare was first known for its famous restaurant-piano bar called the Shaker Club from the 1940's to the mid-'80's. This was a very popular nightclub which attracted many celebrities, dignitaries, and other top industrial leaders to the hotel. |
